The Linguistic Society of Korea and its International Academic Exchanges

The Linguistic Society of Korea (LSK), which publishes the Korean Journal of Linguistics, is a representative and influential linguistics society in Korea that has led the development of modern linguistics research since its foundation in 1975. It currently has more than 1,200 members, and its members' main fields of study cover the entire field of linguistics including the sub-fields of syntax, semantics, phonetics, phonology, morphology, pragmatics, discourse analysis, language acquisition, language education, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, computational linguistics, and neurolinguistics.

Since its establishment, the LSK has led academic exchanges between scholars in various linguistics fields around the world and has led the development of linguistics research with the history and experience of such international academic exchanges. International conferences hosted by the LSK have improved its internationalization capabilities, and networks have been formed through special lectures and papers presented by invited speakers who have world-renowned reputations in the fields of linguistics, cognition, and experimental studies. Two academic conferences are held each year, one of which is an international conference; a large-scale international conference has been held approximately once every five years.

Since the Seoul International Conference on Linguistics (SICOL) was first held in 1981, world-renowned scholars have participated in the conferences as forum lecturers, leading to lively and in-depth discussions among researchers. The results of each SICOL were published in Linguistics in the Morning Calm I, II, III, and IV. Through the international conferences, we have had opportunities to understand the developing trends in linguistic theories and reflect on new directions for the study of language.

In addition, the LSK has played a major role in raising public interest in linguistics and fostering the next generation of academics. From 2010 to 2014, the LSK hosted the “International Linguistics Olympiad National Selection Competition.“ Since 2018, the “Summer Linguistics School” has been held every year to give lectures to graduate students in the fields of phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, experimental syntax, linguistic statistics, and neurolinguistics, and it has played an important role in expanding the basic understanding of linguistics and producing the next generation of academics.

In 2021, the “International Conference on Language and Cognition in conjunction with Symposia for Young Researchers in Linguistics” will be held with financial support from the National Research Foundation of Korea. Manfred Krifka (Humboldt University), Stefan Engelberg (IDS/Mannheim), Martin Hilpert (Université de Neuchâtel), Javier Pérez-Guerra (University of Vigo), Rui Chaves (SUNY at Buffalo) and Mark Davies (BYU) will participate as invited speakers.

We are currently conducting interviews with scholars who have left a big footprint in the development of modern linguistics in Korea through the “Project to Find the Roots of Modern Linguistics in Korea,” and share the interviews in the forms of videos and interview articles published in the Korean Journal of Linguistics. Through this project, efforts are being made to reflect on the history of the LSK, seek future directions for the LSK, and take the lead in suggesting the future of linguistics research.
